De Mello synthesizes Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychology. The book focuses on the need to wake up to our true selves. Most people would rather sleep through life than wake up.
Awareness, composed of short chapters, could easily be divided into weekly readings.
De Mello relates his wisdom in stories that are easier to remember than abstract concepts. However, he is direct and forceful in his teachings and, although this work isn't directly related to centering prayer, it is supportive of the practice. He says, "When there is something within you that moves in the right direction, it creates its own discipline." The book is a distillation from talks de Mello has given and they have been edited by a friend.
